Jennifer and Daniel return with two very different yet equally complex cases.

Charlie’s home life is unbearable. At thirteen, the nightly drinking and violence between her parents creates, in her, a solitary existence of shame and fear. With no other family or friends to lean on, she starts to feel invisible and searches to fill the empty hole in her heart. Mac, an older man of means, preys upon her vulnerability, drawing her into his web with sweet promises of love. She realizes his intentions too late and tries to escape. With the help of a compassionate counselor, Jennifer’s team gets involved in a fight against small-town bias, only to discover that justice is not truly blind.

Anthony, a teen in foster care, has finally found success. A year sober, he had plans for college and looked forward to the wide-open future. Inexplicably, Anthony overdosed on Fentanyl at a chaperoned event. And all the fingers start pointing at the head chaperone, Daniel. Just when his career seemed over, Daniel is cleared when a string of teen overdoses sweeps the city. A killer is targeting teens as easy marks to push his product. Daniel is asked to join a multi-disciplinary team tasked with finding the killer before another body is found.

As their cases intertwine, Jennifer and Daniel find themselves working together again. Will their love overcome the pressures of getting justice for Charlie and Anthony?

Editorial Reviews

"Angela McClintock, Social Worker extraordinaire, has, once again, captured real life in the horrific experiences of everyday individuals and the social workers who help them. A masterful story teller, Ms. McClintock grabs the reader’s interest from sentence one. She, as she did in “The Boy in the Basement”, also leaves the reader hanging and begging for more. I for one cannot wait for book three. Hurry up Angela and sharpen that pen. Waiting is excruciating!" - Trish

"Another great book in the Jennifer Riley series! I love seeing the prospectives from the social workers of CPS as well as the child victims. Very insightful look into the world of Child Protective Services. Heartbreaking at times, but so good!" - Melissa Weisbard
"This book was amazing, it was a good story line as well as educational. As a domestic violence survivor, I was able to relate to a lot of things in this book. I like how she identifies with the lives of CPS caseworkers and their compassion for their cases. I would recommend this book." -
Suzetta Gaudreau
