Plot/Idea: McClintock's gripping and thoughtful murder mystery brims with the usual contenders of thrill and suspense, but it's also an expertly-written story of trauma and loss, viewed through the eyes of childhood friends Katie and Jo-Jo, who both live in New Orleans. When Hurricane Katrina hits, Jo-Jo's family evacuates, while Katie's chooses to stay—decisions that reverberate through both of the girls' futures. The results of those decisions illustrate how impacts can diverge, even in two very similar lives.

Prose: McClintock knows how to write a mystery. Beautifully paced, From Cradle to Grave delves deeply into the mind of a killer, relaying the story from their perspective in a nuanced—sometimes even sympathetic—lens that challenges conventional views of murderers as monsters. The author keeps twists and turns hidden until their big reveals, and readers will be on the edge of their seats to see what happens next.

Originality: It is rare to see a such a compassionately written book that examines sensitive, complex topics. McClintock writes about vulnerable people impacted by natural disaster, how the domino effect of loss and grief can forever shape lives, and the stark challenges of recovering from childhood trauma.

Character/Execution: McClintock's characters jump off the page. Their relationships are intricate, human, and varied: a platonic friendship between a male and female detective, friends leading to something more sinister, deep resentment toward a neglectful parent, and confusing feelings of love. Their interactions and motivations push the plot along, allowing clearer motives to develop as the story rushes toward its propulsive ending.

Kristina:  This is a complex psychological thriller/mystery with depth. The Chapters alternate between two timeliness across the lives of Paget, a female detective with New Orleans PD and JoJo, who we meet as a young girl growing up in the big easy. Pages is assigned to a murder investigation that has her questioning if this murder leads to something more... Jojo is living the American dream childhood until her world is irreparably shattered...Angela McClintock is masterful at writing complex characters with strong female leads. You will not be able to sit back and breeze through this thoughtful thriller. We'll done!

Katie: This author has done it yet again! An easy 5 star read. This book had twists, turns, suspense and trauma. I really felt connected to the FMC. The investigations in this book were written so well with so much knowledge and insight that it made me feel like I was in the room with the detectives. I loved the representation of New Orleans culture as well. But, one of the many things that stood out most to me was the depiction of trauma and human resiliency. Two people can go through trauma and react to it in completely different ways. This book was raw, real, and an amazing thrill of a read. I LOVED IT!
