It’s Halloween in Mobile, Alabama. A nine-year-old boy has been imprisoned by a family member, a six-month old baby dies mysteriously and the life of a young college student is struck down in a senseless act of domestic violence. These cases fall on the shoulders of a young CPS supervisor who must guide her staff in the protection of these children, while she deals with her own losses. The Boy in the Basement is the story of Jennifer Riley, a young CPS Supervisor and her staff who look for the truth in the tragedy. Yet, despite her multiple years as a social worker, she was not prepared for the trauma she would experience after the tragic demise of a former foster child. As she guides her investigators through the steps leading to the truth in the current cases, she must also confront her own self-doubt and secondary traumatic stress

Jennifer and Daniel return with two very different yet equally complex cases.

Charlie’s home life is unbearable. At thirteen, the nightly drinking and violence between her parents creates, in her, a solitary existence of shame and fear. With no other family or friends to lean on, she starts to feel invisible and searches to fill the empty hole in her heart. Mac, an older man of means, preys upon her vulnerability, drawing her into his web with sweet promises of love. She realizes his intentions too late and tries to escape. With the help of a compassionate counselor, Jennifer’s team gets involved in a fight against small town bias, only to discover that justice is not truly blind.

Anthony, a teen in foster care, has finally found success. A year sober, he had plans for college and looked forward to the wide-open future. Inexplicably, Anthony overdosed on Fentanyl at a chaperoned event. And all the fingers start pointing at the head chaperone, Daniel. Just when his career seemed over, Daniel is cleared when a string of teen overdoses sweep the city. A killer is targeting teens as easy marks to push his product. Daniel is asked to join a multi-disciplinary team tasked with finding the killer before another body is found.

As their cases intertwine, Jennifer and Daniel find themselves working together again. Will their love overcome the pressures of getting justice for Charlie and Anthony?

About the Angela

I’m not sure if I am a Social Worker at heart who loves to write or a writer who is passionate about Social Work.

Either way, as they say, this is me.

I have been a storyteller my whole life and I’m not about to stop now!

My first novel, The Boy In The Basement, was an act of love, co-mingling realistic tales of the types of cases that CPS investigators handle with the very real consequence of caring too much:  Secondary Traumatic Stress.  The Boy in the Basement won First Place at the 2024 Bookfest Awards!
